Fannie Flagg, the Alabama-born author best known for her acclaimed novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, is set to publish a new book this summer.
The collection, titled Something to Look Forward To, will be released on August 19 by Random House. According to the publisher, the book features “warmhearted, always surprising stories” centered on characters navigating life’s unexpected twists with humor and resilience.
“With her imagination, humor, and great understanding of the human heart, Fannie Flagg holds a mirror up to the foibles, ingenuity, and imagination of people,” Random House said in a statement. “She inspires us to laugh at the sometimes eccentric, sometimes brilliant ways people cope with—and ultimately prevail over—the challenges of modern life.”
Flagg, a native of Birmingham, initially pursued a career in acting before turning to writing. Her breakout success came with Fried Green Tomatoes, which portrayed life in a small Southern town through the lens of those often overlooked by society. The novel was later adapted into a successful 1991 film.
Her most recent book, The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop, published in 2020, served as a sequel to Fried Green Tomatoes, revisiting the characters and setting more than three decades later.
Something to Look Forward To will mark Flagg’s return to the literary spotlight with a fresh offering of character-driven storytelling that has become her hallmark.
