Craig Johnson, the acclaimed author behind the popular Longmire series, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Contributions to Western literature.
The Western Writers of America (WWA) announced the honor this week, recognizing Johnson’s enduring impact on the genre. Johnson, a resident of Ucross, will formally receive the award at the WWA’s annual convention scheduled for June in Amarillo, Texas.
The Owen Wister Award, named after the influential Western author known for The Virginian, is considered one of the highest accolades in Western literary circles, celebrating authors who have significantly shaped the portrayal of the American West.
