Tipperary-based author Carl J. Ashley, known as ‘The Write Coach,’ will launch his latest book, The Power of the Written Word, at An Siopa Bhaile in Blessington on June 13. The new release encourages readers to harness the healing potential of writing by sharing their personal journeys.
Drawing on his extensive life experiences, Ashley—father of four and an established writing mentor—presents his ninth book and fourth published work, offering an insightful guide aimed at overcoming the fears and doubts that often deter aspiring authors. The book explores personal development and trauma recovery through the therapeutic act of writing.
Speaking about the inspiration behind The Power of the Written Word, Ashley highlighted his hope that local mental health organizations will attend the Wicklow launch event. He views book launches as an opportunity to support and spotlight vital community services.
“This book is not derived from formal education or textbook knowledge but from lived experience,” Ashley said. “Everyone has a story to share. Storytelling, or scéalaíocht, is deeply rooted in Irish culture, blending personal experience, mythology, and tradition. It remains a crucial, though sometimes overlooked, part of our social fabric.”
Ashley explained that the book is designed for individuals who want to write their own stories but feel overwhelmed by the process. He addresses common challenges such as self-doubt, procrastination, and impostor syndrome—barriers many encounter when beginning to write.
“Moving beyond these obstacles is a powerful step in healing through writing,” he noted. “Writing your story is more than putting words on a page; it’s about owning your journey and reclaiming personal authority.”
Ashley also emphasized his commitment to mental health advocacy. Since the pandemic lockdown, he has run an online men’s mental health group and supports clients of all genders, helping them work through traumatic experiences via the cathartic process of storytelling.
“I use all my book launches as platforms to promote mental health services in the local area,” he added. “This launch will feature guest speakers raising awareness about mental health resources.”
Originally from Manchester and now residing in County Tipperary, Ashley has chronicled his struggles with addiction, abusive behaviours, multiple midlife crises, bereavement, and divorce in his previous self-published narrative nonfiction works.
In 2019, he established Write Coach Ireland, offering mentorship, ghostwriting, editing, and proofreading to individuals ready to share their stories. Ashley describes his role as blending writing support with elements of personal development and counselling.
“Having advised business owners and private clients, my own lived experience equips me to help others face their challenges,” he explained. “I believe everyone’s story matters, no matter how small it may seem. Sharing it can be deeply healing and inspirational—not only personally but also within families affected by trauma.”
Ashley’s clients have found the process profoundly cathartic and instrumental in overcoming pain and rebuilding family relationships.
The Power of the Written Word will be officially launched on June 13 at 7 p.m. at An Siopa Bhaile, Blessington.
