Canadian author Genevieve Graham, known for her work in historical fiction, has released her latest novel, On Isabella Street. In an exclusive interview with Ian White, Graham discusses the inspiration behind the book, which is set on a real street in Toronto during the year 1967, amidst the backdrop of the Vietnam War.
Graham, who has earned critical acclaim for her previous works, explained her approach to bringing historical events to life. “I think of the event in history as a black-and-white photograph, and it’s my job to research so much that it becomes real and starts to feel like I’m colorizing that black-and-white photo,” she told CTV News.
On Isabella Street introduces readers to a young Canadian man who served alongside U.S. forces during the Vietnam War, a period when Canada was officially uninvolved in the conflict. Graham revealed, “It was a little concerning since Canada wasn’t officially in the Vietnam War, but then I discovered that between 20,000 and 40,000 Canadians actually went to fight down there.” This revelation inspired her to explore the personal and societal complexities of Canadians involved in the war.
The novel is the latest in Graham’s prolific career, with several of her previous books achieving bestseller status, including spots on the USA Today and Globe and Mail charts. Her works have resonated with a wide audience, and she takes pride in their growing visibility, especially in unexpected places.
“I embrace the opportunity for my books to be featured in Canadian drugstores,” she said. “Being able to walk into a Shoppers Drug Mart and unexpectedly find a book that you’ve heard about or that you’re curious about, that’s a great way to have your eyes opened to what’s out there without going in for a specific purpose, and I do appreciate that.”
