First-year students at St. Mary’s Secondary School in Wexford were treated to an inspiring visit on Tuesday, April 29, by Patricia Forde, Galway’s own Laureate na nÓg. Forde, an acclaimed children’s author, engaged with the students, sharing her passion for literature and encouraging them to embrace their creativity.
As Ireland’s current Laureate na nÓg, Forde has made significant contributions to children’s literature, having authored more than 25 books in both English and Irish. The Laureate position, which she has held since 2023, celebrates the rich world of children’s writing and aims to foster a love for reading among young audiences. Forde will serve in the role until 2026.
During her visit, Forde captivated the students with her presentation, emphasizing the transformative power of stories. “Your minds are full of stories,” she told them, highlighting the significance of books as both mirrors and windows into the lives of others. She explained that books allow readers to see themselves reflected in characters and, at the same time, gain insight into experiences beyond their own.
Forde’s words resonated with the students, as she encouraged them to express their own stories and not be afraid to “make it up as you go along.” Her message of creativity and self-expression inspired not only the students but also the teaching staff in attendance.
Annie Byrne and Lilly Venn, two of the first-year students, shared their excitement after meeting Forde in person. “We were delighted to meet a writer like Patricia,” said Annie. “Her encouragement to keep reading and start writing our own stories was so inspiring,” added Lilly.
Forde’s visit to St. Mary’s marked a memorable occasion, reinforcing the importance of storytelling and nurturing young talent in the world of literature.
