A new genealogical novel delving into the history of Exmoor has been released by South West author Helen Baggott.
Memories from the Future, the third installment in Baggott’s Posted in the Past series, follows the story of Arthur Saville, an author who traveled to Exmoor in 1911 to explore the practice of ‘letterboxing’—a pastime where visitors hide cards in jars or tins at remote locations.
Through Arthur’s daily postcards sent to his wife in London, the novel captures stories and snapshots of the area from over a century ago. These historical documents were rediscovered by genealogist Hilary Holmes, who used extensive archival research and genealogy tools to uncover the narratives Arthur recorded during his travels.
The resulting book offers readers a unique blend of historical insight and a guide to Exmoor’s heritage, presenting a compelling puzzle inspired by Arthur’s findings. Illustrated with authentic black and white postcards from the early 20th century, Memories from the Future paints a vivid picture of the landscape and life in the region during that period.
