Local author Patrick Baird will officially launch his latest novel, Van Hoke’s Caper, this weekend with a book signing event on Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at OtherWorlds Books and More, located at 41 N. 3rd Avenue in Sturgeon Bay.

Set against the backdrop of Door County during the Prohibition era from 1929 to 1931, Van Hoke’s Caper follows the exploits of Thumper Van Hoke and his partner Granville “Duke” Dukenfield. The pair navigate the challenges of rum-running, moonshine production, and brewing wildcat beer as they attempt to outsmart local law enforcement, federal agents, and the Chicago mob. The novel offers a spirited homage to Wisconsin’s historical relationship with alcohol, blending rich period detail with humor and intrigue.

Baird, who has lived in Door County since 2020, is a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee graduate and a prolific writer with eight novels to his name. His previous work, Darkness at Death’s Door, was a local bestseller in 2024.

Readers and community members are invited to meet Baird and explore his latest work at the upcoming event.
