At 91, Melbourne’s Jim McGurk Publishes His Debut Novels

After a decade of dedicated work, local author Jim McGurk has released not one, but two novels at the age of 91. McGurk’s debut fantasy adventure series, The Hobo, The Dragonfly & The Sparrow — Book 1 and Book 2 — chronicles the thrilling journey of a group of young friends who confront dangerous adults intent on erasing the heritage of Florica, a mysterious 13-year-old gypsy girl.

Both paperback and e-book editions are now available on Amazon.

McGurk describes his work as a story about unity and resilience. “The book shows there is strength in standing together. There’s a lot of gypsy magic and even a Jewish family. Growing up, I saw both sides of prejudice, which allowed me to explore the topic deeply,” he explained.

The inspiration for the story came from an encounter at a gypsy wedding years ago, where McGurk found himself dancing with a captivating gypsy woman.

Born into an Irish Catholic family in Philadelphia, McGurk moved frequently throughout his life, living in cities including Miami, Chicago, Denver, Peoria, and Orlando. He began his career with Trans World Airlines (TWA) as an operations agent before transitioning to work as an addictions counselor in Miami. “I don’t drink or smoke; I gave that up,” he said.

McGurk served five years in the Navy Reserve and the Air Force. Over the years, he has written approximately 300 poems and short stories.

Four years ago, he returned to Florida and last July moved into Trinity Towers East.

Despite having only a high school diploma, McGurk credits five books recommended by his late second wife as his primary education in writing. He is an active member of the Space Coast Writers’ Guild.

Joanne Fisher, a Melbourne-based editor and writing coach who assisted in publishing McGurk’s books, praised his determination and spirit. “Jim is a real pistol — sharp, witty, and always moving. Keeping up with his energy and enthusiasm is no small feat, but it proves that passion knows no age. It’s never too late to chase a dream,” she said.

When asked about future projects, McGurk’s eyes lit up. “Book 3 could be about adventures in Mexico. This story is too good to end,” he said. He also hopes to publish translations of his books in five additional languages.
