Kathleen DuVal, a historian and author dedicated to preserving Native American history, has been honored with a distinguished award for her book Native Nations. DuVal expressed her astonishment and excitement upon learning of the award, revealing that she had been unaware she was even nominated.
Native Nations provides a comprehensive exploration of over 1,000 years of Native American history, from the pre-Columbian era to the present day. The book highlights the histories of various Native nations, shedding light on their resilience through the centuries, from the initial contact with European settlers to the modern-day struggles and triumphs of Native communities.
In her book, DuVal specifically focuses on Native American groups such as the Quapaws of Arkansas, offering an in-depth examination of their history, cultural evolution, and present-day activities. She believes that understanding Native American history is crucial not only for insight into the past but also for shaping the future.
“I’ve always known that Native American history would be a significant part of what I teach and write about, but over time, it has become even more important to me,” DuVal said. Growing up in Northwest Arkansas, her connection to Native history deepened as she progressed in her academic career.
The recognition of Native Nations has sparked widespread praise from DuVal’s colleagues and students. “I feel like we all won this prize together,” DuVal shared, reflecting the collective support she has received throughout her career.
One of the central messages of DuVal’s book is the ongoing presence of Native American nations. “They’re still here,” DuVal emphasized, pointing out that Native communities continue to thrive across the United States today.
In addition to celebrating the book’s success, DuVal expressed her joy at being featured by an Arkansas station. “I miss Arkansas, but I come back as often as I can,” she said, underscoring her continued connection to her home state.
Native Nations is currently available for purchase online and will be released in paperback on May 27.
