In a remarkable literary feat, 13-year-old Challa Mahirama has authored an English fiction novel titled Ruby’s Bluestream and the Bond of Fire, a story that explores the intricate relationship between nature and the five elements through the eyes of child protagonists.
The novel was officially unveiled on Thursday at a ceremony held at Adikavi Nannaya University (AKNU), where Vice-Chancellor Prof. S. Prasanna Sree lauded Mahirama’s achievement. “Mahirama’s captivating narrative and unique storytelling style, including her own vocabulary, stand out, especially considering her young age,” the VC remarked.
Mahirama is the granddaughter of the renowned Rajamahendravaram physician Dr. Challa Venkata Subbaraya Sastry (CVS Sastry). She spent her early childhood in the United States and is currently a ninth-grade student in Hyderabad, following her father’s transfer.
Prof. Prasanna Sree highlighted Mahirama’s dedication to writing from the age of eight, noting that while many of her peers are engaged with mobile devices, she chose to channel her creativity into literature. “Her story is not just about fiction but an expression of her empathy towards nature and the importance of preserving it,” the VC said.
Apart from writing, Mahirama is also trained in Carnatic vocal music and has skills in keyboard, painting, and songwriting, showcasing her versatile talents. The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to draw inspiration from Mahirama’s accomplishments and to pursue their goals with integrity and passion.
During the event, Mahirama shared insights into her novel, explaining that it reflects her belief in the deep bond humans share with nature and the consequences of disregarding it. She expressed her gratitude to Gandham Pavana from London for designing the book’s cover and her excitement that Prof. Prasanna Sree—who has contributed to the development of scripts for 19 tribal languages—released her book.
The ceremony was attended by Mahirama’s mother, Challa Sai Sudha; maternal grandparents Gopalamma and A.V.S. Raju; Spruha Alumni Association President Sunkara Nagendra Kishore; as well as university officials and faculty members.
